Correlation factors between hardness and density of solid steel balls Sep 08, 2018

When choosing a solid steel ball, it is not as hard as possible, but has its proper hardness value; steel ball density is also a problem that cannot be ignored. Regarding the influence of the hardness, generally speaking, as the hardness increases, as long as no breakage occurs, the steel ball unit consumption decreases. However, the increase in the hardness of the steel ball can only be moderate, and there is an appropriate range, not the harder the better. If only the ball consumption is considered, the higher the hardness, the lower the consumption.

High-hardness solid steel balls do not necessarily increase productivity or even decrease. Only high productivity can reduce the unit consumption index. Therefore, the primary criterion for selecting a solid steel ball should be high productivity and low media cost. Only high productivity and low media costs can have good economic benefits.

The density of solid steel balls is affected by three aspects. The material is first, the density of different materials is different, the density of steel is larger than that of cast iron, and the alloy steel is different depending on the density and content of the main alloying elements. Secondly, the production method, the rolling and forging steel balls are dense in structure, so the density is large, and the microstructure of the cast steel balls, cast iron balls or cast alloy balls is not dense, and even there are pores therein, so the density is small. In addition, it is the metallographic structure of solid steel balls. The density of different crystal structures such as martensite, austenite, bainite and ferrite is also different, which also affects the crystal fineness.
